

Minca, Sierra Nevada
Minca is a part of the district of Santa Marta, in the department of Magdalena, northern Colombia.
This village is located on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada, about 15 km from the center of the city of Santa Marta.Minca is the ecological capital of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. Among its main attractions are the river of the same name, the Marinka waterfalls, Pozo Azul, Cascada Escondida, among others. It is also worth mentioning its pleasant climate and the traditional cultivation of organic coffee. In recent years, Minca has developed numerous lodging options that offer guests comfort and tranquility.
In the early days, Minca attracted families not only from regions in the interior of Colombia but also from Ireland and Germany, who took advantage of its land and climate to grow coffee. It is home to about 500 people.
Minca and its surroundings offer various attractions thanks to their privileged geographic location; situated at an altitude of 650 meters above sea level, some of the activities you can do in the village include:
- Birdwatching: Being in the middle of the forest, it is possible to observe some of the roughly 300 species of birds, both resident and migratory, that have their habitat in the surroundings of Minca.
- Pozo Azul: After walking about 45 minutes from the center of Minca, you reach Pozo Azul, a remarkable natural pool whose waters flow into the Minca River.
- Marinka Waterfalls: About 90 minutes from the center of town, you can reach the Marinka waterfalls, where you can cool off and take part in rappelling activities.
- Finca La Victoria: Guided tours of the coffee plantations at La Victoria farm, located about 90 minutes on foot from the center of Minca, allow you to learn about the entire cultivation and preparation process for export, and to see the early 20th-century machines that still operate today using hydroelectric power.
- Finca La Candelaria: This farm offers an interesting cacao tour, with detailed explanations from planting all the way to a cup of chocolate.
- Hikes to Los Pinos and La Tagua: These two areas offer visitors incredible views over Santa Marta, El Rodadero, the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, and the valleys of the Sierra Nevada—unmissable and unforgettable panoramas.
How to get there & Where to stay
Minca can be reached from Santa Marta by taxi for an amount (2025) between $60,000 COP and $80,000 COP, or by minivan from the Public Market of Santa Marta for the modest price of $10,000 COP per person each way.
There is a wide range of options: hotels, hostels, ecolodges, glamping.
